HISTORY
Revolutionary War battles were fought on the hills of what is now Fort Washington State Park. Ambler was originally known as the Village of Wissahickon (after the North Penn railroad depot located there). It was renamed Ambler in 1869 to honor Mary Johnson Ambler, a Quaker woman who helped tend to the many wounded in the Great Train Wreck of 1856. Ambler residents who are interested in the area's history can visit the Wissahickon Valley Historical Society in Blue Bell.
PARKS & RECREATION
Residents of Ambler enjoy the outdoors at Fort Washington State Park approximately two and a half miles to the west. They can hike and picnic there during warm weather. The park has areas for cross-country skiing and sledding during the winter. Golfers can find two excellent courses in the area. People who enjoy plays and musicals may want check the calendar of the Act II Playhouse. You can also head into Philly for such venues as The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, where The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Ballet and Opera perform. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority in Ambler has a regular schedule of trains into Philadelphia.
