HISTORY

The Ft. Washington area was settled mostly by German immigrants. During the American Revolutionary War, George Washington and the Continental Army camped here before they moved on to Valley Forge. In 1856, Ft. Washington was the site for one of the worst train accidents in U.S. history when two North Pennsylvania trains collided between the Camp Hill and Ft. Washington stations. The dedicated efforts of Mary Johnson Ambler to attend the wounded (mostly children) led to the nearby town of Ambler being renamed after her in 1869.
