HISTORY

Lower Gwynedd is one of the oldest townships in Montgomery County. The area was settled by Welsh Quakers
(the Welsh word "Gwyn Eth" means "white fields") who arrived to find it blanketed with snow. The township itself was founded in 1891 by William Penn, and it essentially shares the history of America's founding city -- Philadelphia. It's the city of Ben Franklin, the Continental Congress, William Penn, the Declaration of Independence and the Liberty Bell. Philadelphia was also the temporary U.S. capital  from 1790 to 1800. There are dozens of buildings on the National Registry of Historic places, including the Benjamin Franklin Hotel, the Drexel and Company Building and Carpenter Hall on the Independence Mall.
